Poverty

Malawi is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. It is also one of the poorest.

Agriculture is central to the economy, but land distribution is unequal and crops are highly vulnerable to frequent droughts. Poor education and limited vocational training programs mean there are few opportunities for Malawians to improve their situations.

Due to poverty and the precarious farming situation, many Malawians deal with hunger and malnutrition on a daily basis. By some estimates, 50% of the country’s children under age five are stunted due to the lack of adequate nutrition.

Compounding the problem, many people live far from health care services and lack the transportation and money to access adequate care.

The Solution:

Raising Malawi is engaged in creating self-sustaining communities throughout the country by working with community-based partners and other non-governmental organizations. By supporting their efforts, we can continue to:

• Establish vocational training of caregivers and youths
• Institute micro loan projects
• Create communal gardens and animal farming programs
• Invest in the Millennium Villages Project

Raising Malawi helps make daily nutritious meals and clean water more accessible to orphans and vulnerable children. In addition, the organization works to make quality health care to more accessible. With your help, Raising Malawi can continue to:

• Support feeding programs at child care centers and orphanages
• Deliver formula to infants
• Send food packs to people suffering from HIV/AIDS
• Improve access to clean water
• Provide basic health needs through the construction of health facilities and support of government hospitals
