Raising Malawi buildOn Schools

In January 2012, Raising Malawi announced a partnership with nonprofit organization buildOn to build ten schools in Malawi with the capacity to serve over 1,000 children per year in partnership with local government and community members. School construction is already under way with all ten schools to be completed by summer 2013.

About buildOn

buildOn is a non-governmental organization that is breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. Since 1991, buildOn has brought literacy to girls and boys and their parents and grandparents, in developing countries around the world. In the U.S., buildOn's afterschool service programs mobilize urban teens to lift up their communities through intensive local service and change the world and by building schools in some of the poorest countries on the planet.  To date, buildOn has constructed 427 schools worldwide, including 54 schools in villages in Malawi. http://www.buildon.org/

School Approach

• For every school, the partnering community and buildOn sign a covenant stating each parties’ contribution to the project
• Partnering communities provide a gender-balanced leadership team, voluntary unskilled labor, land for the school, local materials, demonstrated authorization by the government to have a school and promise that boys and girls must be sent to school in equal numbers
• Construction materials, transportation, skilled labor, project management, construction plans and training is provided by buildOn staff
• Teachers and curriculum for each school are provided by Malawi’s Ministry of Education

School Progress
