The Raising Malawi team has returned from visiting our project to construct a paediatric surgery and intensive care unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH). Construction began in May 2015 and the facility is on schedule to open early 2017.
The new project represents an expansion of Raising Malawi’s work at QECH since 2008 with Professor Eric Borgstein, one of four paediatric surgeons in the country. Through the partnership with Raising Malawi, Professor Borgstein has developed a paediatric surgical training program at QECH, which trained the first Malawian-born paediatric surgeon, Dr. Tiyamike Chilunjika. The training program will be expanded in the new facility, creating a long-term, sustainable workforce.
During the trip, we also took time to meet with His Excellency President Peter Muthrika to discuss girls' education and the pediatric surgery project and spent time at Home of Hope orphanage. meeting the children we support, volunteering and playing soccer.
