HIV/AIDS + Disease

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to plague Malawi. The national rate of infection among adults remains near 12%, due in large part to a lack of education. Nearly 67,000 people die of AIDS each year—enough people to fill an average stadium.

HIV/AIDS has had a particularly devastating impact on children. A 2008 UNAIDS report estimated 640,000 children are orphaned because they’ve lost both parents to the disease.

The Solution:

These numbers may be daunting, however, even a little progress can make a significant difference. Through donations and efforts of volunteers, Raising Malawi is able to provide basic health needs by:

• Constructing new health facilities in underserved areas
• Supporting government hospitals
• Creating educational HIV/AIDS-prevention programs
• Procuring antiretroviral treatments and other drugs
