Raising Malawi is excited to announce the addition of Maki Park to our growing family.
Ms. Park has recently been named the Educational Consultant for the forthcoming Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. As such, Maki will help to develop the curriculum at the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, hire the school's headmistress, and train its future staff.
Maki holds a Masters degree in Education from Harvard University and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new post. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkmenistan, Maki gained a deep understanding of the vital importance of education for children trapped in cycles of poverty and stagnation. During her time there, Maki planned and directed a nation-wide Model United Nations conference for college-aged students of promise, and taught English to over one hundred Turkmen and Russian pupils.
As a staunch advocate for gender equity, particularly in access to education, Maki brings great passion to the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls team. She believes, as do we, in universal access to education as a right for all, regardless of gender or socio-economic station. With her comprehensive understanding of education systems in underprivileged areas, management skills, and dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable children, Maki will be a valuable asset to our team. Her work for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls will do much to break down the barriers to education faced by Malawi’s female population.
You can get to know a bit more about the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls new Educational Consultant by viewing the video that accompanies this piece. Maki speaks about her immersion in Turkmenistan culture, the importance of understanding the cultural impact of aid work on a community, and the significance of correctly assessing the needs of developing nations before imposing Western standards of practice and unrealistic ideas of progress. Her eloquence is impressive, and her enthusiasm is inspiring.
We warmly welcome Maki Park to the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls development team.
