Despite disaster and despair of their own, Malawi has joined the community of nations lending a helping hand to Haiti.
My prayers are with the people of Haiti. I can’t imagine the terrible pain and suffering they are experiencing. Sadly the depths of the tragedy are just becoming known and the need for our support grows more urgent with every passing moment. I have given a donation of $250,000 to assist Haiti’s earthquake victims through Partners in Health, one of Haiti’s leading health care providers. I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can.
The earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday was truly devastating. The disaster was terrible, but the outpouring of support from all over the world – from the delivery of supplies to the incredible online donations – gives us hope for Haiti’s recovery. While Haiti has captured much of the world’s attention, a series of earthquakes have rocked Malawi – the worst to hit that country in decades. It is estimated that four have died, 180 have been injured, and 24,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed.

There's a new way to show your support for the children of Malawi: by wearing it around your neck. Inspired by Madonna's commitment to the children of Malawi, designer Aurora Lopez Mejia designed and launched a custom line of jewelry to benefit Raising Malawi.
In Malawi, a little ingenuity can go a long way. In this fascinating TED video, 22 year old Malawian William Kankwamba tells us how he helped his family overcome famine and hardship on their farm in 2001. From spare parts he gathered from a junkyard, William built a windmill in his yard that powered irrigation for the farm and four light bulbs, a radio, and cell phone for his family home.
Three years ago Madonna founded Raising Malawi to bring an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's 1,400,000 orphans and vulnerable children once and for all. Weve launched this site to raise awareness of the dire conditions in Malawi, rally people behind the cause, and to let you know how you can be part of the solution.
We hear it all the time—"She was destined for stardom" or "He was destined to fail." Time and again we are told that our paths are determined by an alignment of stars and the circumstances of our birth. For many, this concept is less than comforting.
